Strength Training Over 50:

The Secret Weapon for Longevity, Balance, and Confidence.

If you’re a woman in your 50s, strength training might not be the first thing on your wellness radar—but strength training for women over 50 is one of the most powerful things you can do for your long-term health, energy and confidence. Whether you’re brand new to lifting weights or returning after a break, strength training helps protect your bones, maintain muscle and give you that strong, grounded feeling that carries into everyday life.

We say this not as Personal Trainers, but as women in our 50s ourselves. We’ve experienced the ups and downs of perimenopause and, in Jo’s case, now post-menopause. And we can say confidently: strength training has been transformational. For us and for the many women we work with.

It’s not about “bulking up.” It’s about staying capable and confident – for life.

Why Strength Training for Women Over 50 Matters More Than Ever

As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass and bone density. This can lead to:

– Weaker bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis)

– Slower metabolism and weight gain

– Reduced balance and coordination

– Increased risk of falls and fractures

– Loss of strength and confidence

During perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen levels accelerate this loss. Women, on average, lose 10% of bone mineral density during perimenopause, and post-menopause, up to 0.6% of muscle mass every year (The Musculoskeletal Syndrome of Menopause study). That adds up significantly by our 80s—unless we act now.

The Good News? It’s Not Too Late.

Yes, aging brings change—but it’s not all downhill. While muscle and bone loss are part of the process, they’re not irreversible. We have the power to fight back—and thrive.

Think about it this way: would you drive your car into the ground without a single service or MOT, then just buy a new one when it breaks? Of course not. Our bodies deserve the same care and maintenance. Neglecting strength and nutrition now only speeds up physical decline later.

Our Secret Weapon: Strength Training

You don’t need a gym membership or fancy equipment. Start small, at home. Just 2-3 short sessions of strength training per week can help you:

  • Rebuild and maintain muscle mass
  • Strengthen bones and joints
  • Improve balance and posture
  • Boost metabolism and energy
  • Feel more confident, strong and independent

Why Most Women Over 50 Were Never Shown This

If strength training wasn’t part of your earlier fitness routine, you’re not alone. Most women over 50 were never shown how to do it – or were told it was only for men or younger people.

We want to change that. Because we’ve seen how it improves everyday life: carrying shopping, climbing stairs, hiking hills, lifting grandchildren, staying active on holiday – all of these things get easier when you build strength.

Strength training for women over 50 isn’t about chasing aesthetics – it’s about staying strong for the life you want to live.

How to Start Strength Training in Your 50s (without feeling intimidated)

You don’t need to join a gym or buy lots of equipment to begin.

Start with:

  • Bodyweight moves – like squats and wall push-ups
  • Light dumbbells or resistance bands (or even cans of food from the kitchen!)
  • Focus on good exercise form rather than speed
  • Aim for just 2-3 short sessions per week

And if this all sounds a bit intimidating, or you’re unsure where to begin—we get it. That’s exactly why we created our 6-week “Strength Starts Now” programme. We’ll guide you step-by-step from absolute beginner to feeling strong, capable, and confident.

Strength = Confidence + Independence

If you want to stay independent, energetic and confident as you age, it’s time to embrace strength training for women over 50.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about progression – one workout at a time. It’s never too late to start.

Stay Consistent, Stay Curious

Your body is wise—it just needs the right signals to stay strong. Go at your own pace, focus on how you feel, and celebrate progress beyond the scale.
